Father's Day
I sent a text message Saturday night to my dad. I knew I was going to call him the next day, but I wanted him to get it extra early. On this trip, we've been text messaging a lot. I send pics and things like, "safe n L.V. gr8 tape 2day." He sends things like, "b safe. chk oil." His presence, through technology, is an extention of his presence throughout my life. My parents always say that he's the anchor and mom's the sails. He has provided stability for our family. Stability in that presence, but also as the provider and as the voice of wisdom. He provides stability by laughing at our jokes, and by still holding mom's hand after 42 years. He provided stability in telling us that he was proud of us, and encouraging us to risk, to chase dreams, to have adventures.
I know he's not perfect. He gripes when mom & I want to watch the Style channel, and hrrmphs when my brother & I go to extremes. He spends too much time on e-bay & doesn't like cut flowers much. But his stability makes it safe for me to fling myself all over the country on this roadtrip. "thx dad. luv u."
